BOROUGH COUNCIL.

AVAIPAAVA. (Own Correspondent.) The meeting was held on Friday evening, evening, Jan. 12 th. Present : Crs. Roberts, Pellovv, Bibby, McGreevy, H. M. Rathbone, AV. il. Rathbone, J. Ross, and his Worship the Mayor, Mr. AV. I. Limbriek, in the chair. Mr. Gilmour’s offer of services was accepted on terms submitted—-lo draw plans, specifications, and supervise the work in connection with the street loan works.

The dog tax was fixed at 2 6 for sheep dogs and .1 - for others. Tin' overseer was appointed collector, and the Borough Offices the place for payment.

CORRESPONDENCE. From T. Thompson, sec. Horticultural Society, thanking council for reduction of theatre charges for Society’s show.- Received. From A. E. Jnll, applying for temporary wooden culvert in AVaverley street.

From S. McGreevy. sen., applying for refund of overpaid rates, due to error in Government valuation roll by including a portion of his land vvliich is outside the borough boundary. —Granted. F. A. Bennett offering rental of s'per week for old library building.— Granted, on a weekly tenancy'. From Sainsbury, Logan and Williams. stating that Gasworks site case would be heard at March sittings in Napier.—Received. From Metcalf and Son re pumping plant, building, etc. —Received. From Department of Internal Affairs forwarding Coronation subsidy of £56.

From District Engineer, N.Z.R., Wellington, agreeing to erection of gateway to Lindsay Reserve at the railway end of lane leading from the main road.—Received.

From Commissioner of Police, AVellington, stating that erection of patent' w.c.’s at Police Station and cottage was being considered. — Received, From J. \V. Blackman stating that automatic lighters for gas lamps had not yet come to hand. —Received. From AV. AV. Kidd asking for increase of refund of theatre charge in connection with his skating rink. — Declined, as he had already received a concession of 50 per cent. From AVaipukurau Town Board asking price of coke per ton.—3o/per ton by the truck.

GENERAL. The Gas Committee’s report was adopted. J. Coe’s tender for (log collars was accepted. The tenders for pumping station were referred to the Engineer. Mr. Liddy, architect, Napier, offered to give an estimate for £5 of cost of proposed alteration to theatre on condition that he was employed to dr aw plans, specifications, and super vise the work on the usual terms.—To confer with council at a special meeting to be held on Friday next.

The. Library Committee reported that Mrs. Rennet had sent in her resignation as caretaker as from January Ist, and that Mr. and Mrs. T. AVills had been appointed in her place.—On the suggestion of the Mayor and on the motion of Messrs. Rathbone and Bibby it was resolved to convene a meeting of townspeople with a view of reverting to the old s.ys! cm of the town running the institution, council to provide use of rooms and to charge for cost of gas onlv. ,

Tenders are to be called for the erection of a bridge in wood over the. Brewery creek.—Mr. Rathbone offered the use of land for a temporary bridge. A deputation appointed to confer with the County Council reported that both sides had agreed to pay equal shares for the maintenance and up-keep of the traffic bridge, excepting where heavy expenditure is necessary, in which case the Borough Council is to be consulted. Maintenance works to be carried out by County Council’s staff. The overseer was instructed to prosecute those driving cars at a greater pace than four miles an hour round Bibbv’s corner, and also to erect speed boards. On tb.e motion of Cr. Ross an application is to be sent to the Postal Department for an extra telephone wire to Hastings and Napier, it was pointed out that separate wires at present ran from Dannevirke, Waipukurau and Otane only, and that an average delay of 20 minutes oeeured io connect with these wires from Waipawa.
