ENGINEERING PROJECTS
Three great engineering projects are at present before the country, and some of them, perhaps all, will roc n be entered upon oy the Government. The survey for the Hudson Bay railway has been in progress for some time, and actual construction is abou| to start. The line will run from the ’Pas" on the Saskatchewan river to Fort Churchill, on the Hudson Bay-. v a distance of about 500 miles. Opinions differ as to the number of months in the year during which the route through Hudson Strait will be sufficiently free of ice to allow cf navigation. If only in use b ;• four months, yet this route will represent an immense saving of time and money in the expert of wheat from the Western provinces to Europe. The other two projects are the building of the Georgian Bay (.’anal and the widening of the Welland Canal. Millions of bushels of wheat and millions of tons of ore are carried each summer by the inland liners of Canada which ply on the Great lakes. By connecting the Georgian bay and the Ottawa river by a ship can?.! the distance by water from the head of Lake Superior to Montreal would bo shortened by hundreds of miles. The Welland Canal connects Lake Erie with Lake Ontario, and by it the obstacle of Niagara Falls is overcome. It is still a great ship ■anal, but it is r.o longer large enough t<> accommodate the largest vessels of the Upper Lakes, and as the Ciorgian Bay canal cannot be compi. ;t d for many years it is probable that the Welland will be enlarged so that, the largest lake vessel. -'Gift in length, can take wheat from Fort W .1 .n i. u the head of Lak? Superi- • to I. i- rpo '.
