An Auckland wire says : Mr. H. B. Irving am! his wife were accorded a ■ivie reception and speeches of welcome were made by the Mayor (Mr. Parr) and .Messrs. B. Kent and T. AV. Leys, representing the Shakespearian societies, and tlie Press. Mr. Irving acknowledging the welcome spoke of the high and noble purpose of the theatre in cultivating interest in sounder drama.
