FIXTURES. Jan. 23 and 21 —Wairoa County R.C. Annual Meeting. April 8 and 9 —Feilding J.C. Easter. HAWKE'S BAY JOCKEY CLUB. SUMMER MEETING. FIRST DAY. A BIG ATTENDANCE. The summer meeting of the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club opened in ideal weather yesterday. There was hardly a cloud in the sky and only the lightest of light breezes. It was a day when all could give themselves up to the thorough enjoyment of the outing. Ladies donned their most charming costumes and as a result the lawns and grandstand presented a gay and animated appearance. For an ‘•<;ff meeting’’ the attendance was exceptionally large and we understand constituted a record for the club. There were people present from ail parts of the province, including many from as far south as Dannevirke. The course was in first class order, and as a consequence the going was good and fast. Fields were not particularly large, but the work done was decidedly satisfactory. There were no sensational dividends paid, but tlie machine handled a lot of monet, putting through ,£12.646 as against £Blll J r the corresponding day last year. It must, however, be remembered that the bookmaker was then allowed to operate and. this gentleman with his sweet persuasive voice doubtless accounted for a big proportion of the margin between the two meetings. The opening race ci the day, .the Ma’den Hack, brought out a field of nine and' Hon. J. D. Ormond’s time year gelding Kirkbv was favowed. He was, however,' slow to get awav from the } -.st ami San Wai and Easy made the pace too warm for him to cver-l-ai’l. San Wai had none too much t<> spare in his win. In the Christmas Handicap the nublic again stuck to Hon. J. D. Ormond's stable and made Altcar favourite and this time their trust was rewarded by the Birkenhead-Teme-raire gelding. He led the field from the start and although hu .tleu ven.-ho-.ie vias ah' " to held ho p m ■•n in iii-nt. In the Welter Mr. Con.
