Redward is also cvide-nA,-' m good form. At Waipukurau he ron second in the 4-10 yards and fiy.-t in the mile run. At Ormondville F■-.■ to t third in the half mile and first in ll.e mile. A noticeable feature in hoth the Waipukurau ard Onnoadriile meetings was the close finishes in the inajmiiy of the handicap events. This speaks far more forcibly than the pen can fur the handicapper, Mr. W. G. Callender. A number of Hawke’s Bay athcieies' names appear in the Taihape handicaps (published yesterday). Redward appears to have been let off very lightly by the handicapper. His chances in the half and mile events appear to be particularly good.

“Peds” are reminded tliat entries close to-night at 8 o’clock for the Matamau meeting. This club are this year pulling on an attractive programme and no doubt will receive a large number of entries. Neither the Hastings Cycling and Athletic Club nor the Hastings United Friendly Societies Chib have held their annual general meeting of members. It is quite time that these were held. No doubt after the holidays both clubs will make a mc( e.

New Zealand scored a meritorious win .in the Australasian Amateur Championship Meeting held this week at Wellington. It is a peculiar fact that our representatives won all the field events of the meeting, yet in the putting the shot, bammer and such events they failed to get a win.. At this meeting New Zealand secured 10 wins and 8 seconds. New South Wales were second with two veins and two seconds, —]caving ft large margin. The fact that the New Zealand amateur runners are perhaps of a higher standard than their Australian opponents is not singular. In. the Commonwealth far better prize money is offered to professional runners than in this Dominion with the result that the amateur ranks arc- considerably drained.
