CHESS TOURNAMENT

OPENED AT NAPIER. The annual tournament for the chests championship of the Dominion opened in the Municipal Chambers, Napier, at 10.30 this morning. Last evening a meeting; of competitors was held, when rules in connection with the contest wore satisfactorily arranged. This is the first occasion on which the championship has been held in ?<apier. There are twelve competitors, so that there will he 66 games—eleven rounds of six games cadi. Auckland is represented by two of its best players, Messrs. Grierson and Miles, and Mr. Claude Sainsbury represents Gisborne. Napier’s candidate, Mr. Jourdain, is making his first bid for the championship. Mr. George Jones, wliu represents Masterton, is the president of the local club. Mr. J. A. Connell, the Carterton nomi- !:??, has done valued work for New Zealand ch.-s.s as its executive officer, and in many other ways. He has made two previous attempts to capture the championship. 'l’he Wellington Chess Club’s nominees are Messrs. IV. It. Mason and FI. L. Janies. The formei at present holds the championship foi the third time in his brilliant career. He has been to six congresses, and only mice failed to gain a prize; at bis last attempt, two years ago, in Auckland, he atm:.-xod two prizes. As a writer on chess he possibly has no equal in Australmsi;’.. and s ery few superiors anywhere. The South Wellington Chess Club sends Air. Edwin Hicks, who so al.lv represented it at Timaru last Christmas, when he won a prize. The Wellington Working M ui’s Club have nominated Mr. F. K. Kelling. and have intimated with regret that Air.
