Quiet play ensued for some time and four wickets fell for 7o runs. Then Ashcroft (20), Grant (17) and Hichens (30) gave the bo'vlers some trouble, piling on runs with fair rapidity, notwithstanding that Cato tried ail his available howling strength, and the board shoxved a total of 204 before the last man was disposed of. Hastings won the toss and batted first on a fast wicket. The opening pair were Board and Fairey, Right from the start Board was at home with the bowling, but he soon lost Fairey, who made a hit for 4 and was then beaten by a ball which he should have tried to smother, instead of which he lashed out, mishit it, and.was caught at third man. O’Brien came next and was soon at home with the bowling, and runs were piled on at a terrific "rate. Board was playing superb cricket, making runs all round the wicket, and O’Brien was getting his. chiefly by off drives and hitting hard and clean. He gave a possible chance when the score was in the 80’s, otherwise he played well for his runs, but his innings was somewhat overshadowed by kis partner, who was playing absolutely correct cricket. However, .O’Brien’s innings was a good one. and in his score of 60 he notched nine fours. He was bowled by Chadwick. Coggins was next to partner Board and was playing well when thrown out. He was himself to blame. A'oung eame next and made a single, and was then bowled by a real trimmer from Wood. Young is having bad luck this year. Baker came in and made two fours and a two in his usual way. and was then caught in fhe slips by Wood off Lusk. During this period Board had been batting with rare skill and at a good rate, for he had now reached the magnificent score of 172, and it may truly be said he allowed AVood to bowl him. It was* a gift to the bowler. For had Board chosen he could have stayed in all day. He treated all the bowling alike—that is he punished it severely. AVhen the men in the field were moved to try and stop a particular stroke, he would promptly place the ball between them or else put it on the spot a man had just left. He would first drive it hard to the off : then to the on ; again square cut it to the boundary ; and pull it, and hook it, and leg-glance the ball in a marvellous way that was most disconcerting to the bowlers, fielders, and captain alike. His was a magnificent innings of orthodox cricket, and those who were there to see it must have learned a good lesson, and those who were with him at the stumps had an object lesson in running between wickets . Board showed the cricketers of Hawke’s Bay by his play that he was their master, and that his previous small scores are nothing to go by. He has only to say to himself. “I’ll make runs.” and no bowler here can stop him. He hit 28 fours, II twos, and 38 singles, and never gave a single chance. Atkinson was the only other man to score double figures. He scored 27 , chiefly by square cuts. Parkinson shaped well, but when he had made 5 he gave a hot return to the bowler (Wood), who held it. Napier never seemed at home when facing Lusk, who eventually bowled him without scoring. Reeves came next and was run out when he had made two. Here it would be well to suggest that when running between wickets to ground the bat. as by so doing one can often make good the ground required. Richardson came in last man, and made a single, but lost his partner, who was bowled by Lusk. The innings closed for 317. There were 20 minutes left for play when United went in to bat, and they lost two wickets for 43, but there should have been 4 wickets down, as Napier dropped a catch off Fairey.
