GROSS Mt. MINE CATASTROPHE
CANARIES UTII ISED. (Received 14, 9.5 a.m.) New York. Dec. 13. Canaries were utilised at Gross Mountain mine, which showed the deadly gases were strong. A few more bodies have been recovered. FIRE AGAIN BROKEN OUT. ALL HOPE ABANDONED. (Received It. 11.55 a.m.) New York. Dee. 13. Fire has broken out a second time, and all hope is abandoned for the rescue of the remaining miners. Numerous messages were found scrawled on the walls of the mine, indicating that the men had been driven further in because of the fatal gas. Thirty-eight bodies have been found.
