Racing men in particular will regret to learn of the death of Air. P. F. Tancred, which took place at his home in Alasterton on Wednesday morning. Deceased, who was a son of the late Sir Thomas Tancred and a brother of the late Sir Thomas Si'by Tancred (who died in London some twelve months ago), had been in poor health for the past two or three years. In the early’ eighties the deceased was one of the best footballers in the Wellington province, and was one ot the founders of Rugby football in the Wairarapa. For many years Air. Tancred was closely identified with racing, and among the best horses owned by him were Administrator. King's Bowman. Forester and Penates. Hopeful, the dam of Alundic and I seful, died a few days ago after foaling to Birkenhead. Hopeful was a useful performer at country meetings. especially- at Woodthorpe. Unlike most max's s he raced well after being at the st ml, and won the AVoodthorpe Cup a couple of seasons ago. Her daughter, I seful, won the same race last year. Aliscount is a staunch favourite for the Auckland Cup. Alidnight Sun is expected to do better m the -Auckland Cui) than his recent form suggests. All'. T. H. Lowry must have grown tired of Cullinan when he allowed the big gelding to go for 3u guineas to Mr. J. Ilennah. of Hastings. Twelve months ago Cullinan was easilv the best hack racing in Hawke’s Bay. It is rarely that a racing club has to postpone a meeting after getting half way through, but such was the case at Takapuna last week. Three horses fell in the tlnrd race on account of the slippery nature of the track, and five came to grief in the fourth race. Fortunately none of the riders were hurt. Xi w Zealand horses have beefl showing some good form in India lately. The latest news from there is that Soultline was regarded as a certainty for the Trials at Calcutta and some of the bookmakers were barring him in the big double—The Trials and Viceroy’s Cup. Aborigine was also being kept on the safe side as regarded the Cup raee. The ex-New Zealand jockey (R. Cameron) earned £330 12 - at the recent Victoria Racing Club’s meeting in riding fees. G. Lambert, who rode the winner of the Derby ami Oaks, received £167 9 -.

F. AVootton has headed the list of winnings jockeys in England for the last three years. H:s total of'lB7 winners for the past season is a particularly good one, but it is. not a record. T. Coates rode 222 winners in 1893.

The fall which Dazzling received on the Feilding racecourse when being exercised jirior to the meeting may have been the cause of her poor showing in the Flying Handicap cn the first day-. Yearlings in Argentine make great prices. Twenty veari-mgs by Cyllene brought the satisfactory average of £5500 each at a recent sale. The highest price was Chambertin (Cyllene—Albilla). which brought the high price of 60,000 dollars. CRICKET. ENGLAND v. AUSTRALIAN XI. Brisbane, Dec. 8. There was an attendance of 5000 at the match to-day. England opened disastrously, three wickets falling for no runs. Kinneir and Douglas’ defence saved the side.
