Mr. S. E. McCarthy. S.M., intimated at the Hastings Court this morning that he would give judgment in the New Zealand Leatherubher Company's cases on next court day. The chairman of the Hawke’s Bay Count v Council. Mr. Mason Chambers. visited Kereru to-day, where he inspected some new roads that settlers wish to be taken over by the council.

Thirty five applications have been received for the position of tramways traffic manager at Wellington. The applications have been referred to the Tramways Committee. The City Council has also received a letter signed by nearly every em-ploy-re expressing contentment with th present management. On account of a defect in fhc pumps there have been no hot salt water baths at the Municipal baths for the last few days. Repairs are now being made and the baths will probably be in use again to-morrow. Under the new regulations the custodian cleans and fills the bath, but last night he was unable to get the engine to start, and it was found necessary: to delay the filling until this morning.

An item of 4 9 for repairs to Straker waggon appeared amongst the accounts to be passed for payment at last night’s meeting of the Hastings Borough Council, and CT. McCormick wanted to know what the repairs consisted of. The Engineer (Mr. Cook) replied that Air. P. Aniner had taken the waggon to Napier to give it .a trial and repairs had to be effected to the boiler. He thought the waggon had received Its death blow as far as its utility was concerned. Cr. Hart suggested that the engineer should take a single ticket to Napier and bring the waggon back before it incurred further expense.

Questions bulked largely in Air. G. Laurenson’s election address at Lyttelton last Tuesday, and one of them evoked shouts of laughter. It was a query as to whether the member was in favour of penalising boys and girls abroad unattended after 8 p.m. Air. Lnurenson remarked that it was not long since some missionary laws had been repealed in the Islands. One was that no young man should walk out with a young woman after dark unless lie had a lighted torch in liis r'ght hand. He was of opinion that if the law were in force in Lyttelton the Sumner road on a fine night would resemble a torchlight procession. This proposal he thought was worthy of consideration.

Yesterday afternoon Air. R. D. D. AlcLean presided over a meeting of the Navy League held in the Napier Borough Council Chambers. Remits from the conference were considered, including the publication cf a New Zealand Navy- League Supplement, to contain New Zealand local naval news, a recommendation to the Education Department to incorporate in each number of the School Journal further information in regard to British naval history, and the putting of questions to Parliamentary candidates respecting the naval defence of the Empire. All the recommendations considered wi-rc approved of, and necessary action in each instance will be carried out. The Napier branch is offering three prizes, open fo primary schools in the Hawke's Bay educational district, the junior subject being "The Story of the Armada.” an dthe secondary one ‘'How Can the Empire Best Alaintain Its Sunrcmacv at Sea !"
