(By "Elevat ion.”) We have received from the secretary of the Feilding Jockey Club a booklet in which is inserted the programmes for their November and Easter meetings. For the year the club gives the respect able total or £5550 in stakes. Dates of nominations, acceptances, and amounts to be paid are givtn, as well as the nominations for the sixth ’ I’eilding Stakes to be run .at the forthcoming spring meeting and entries for the Seventh Stakes to be iun at the November meeting in 1912. With past winni rs of the Feilding Cup and Feilding Stakes inserted the booklet makes useful and interesting reading to racing men.

Apropos of attempts to legislate against betting, a good story is told i,.f a brcki-n-ilcwn bockmaker who get into the work-house. While out fcr his usual walk cue day he met an old friend who inquired how he was getting on. "Not so bad,” was the reply, "but the work is too much for me. I shall have to engage a clerk. I can reckon 2 to 1 against to -Joz of tobacco or Mb of tea, but when it comes tc 7 to -.! on to half a portion of suet roll, I’m beat.” Royal Scotch has evidently impressed Handicapper Henrys by the way he can get over 6 furlongs, for in tb.c Stewards’ Handicap to be decided at the Canterbury Jockey Club s iiu-i ting next month he has set the

son of Royal Artillery to carry 8.8 in the big sprint event. As 8.9 is the heaviest weight carried to victory in the event by a three-year-old —which was the weight Machine Gun carried—it will at once be seen that Royal Scotch has got a fair load to carry- M’hen Gold Crest won the Stewards’ Handicap after winning the Hawke’s Bay Guineas he carried 8.3 in the former event.

Midnight Sun arrived in Wellington from Sydney by the Manuka on AVeilncsday last.

Gold Thread has retired from the turf and been mated with Ilymettus.

As was to tie expected Fort William did not have his New Zealand Cup engagement continued. The horse has been unsound for months past and the severe strain of training for a race cf the nature cf the Cup would have been sure to have broken him down altogether.

Motoa has at last wen a race in Australia. Nir. Manifold paid 1000 guineas for the New Zealander over two vi ars ago and the Tccr.ak Handicap, which Motoa won a few (.lays ago. is the first return he has had on !,i« outlay. Motca is ttained. by D. J. Price at Caulfield.

The presence cf Bubrlkoff in the Champion Plate, to be decided at the XX'ellington Racing Club s meeting on Monday, has had the effect of frightening a number of the field cut of it. Only seven horses have been paid up for. The race is of 4(>o sovs (a cup valued at 100 sovs presented by G. D. Greenwood and 300 sovs in specie.) It is a weight-for-age event and run over 1.1 mile. Bobrikoff has to give Mira, a maiden performer, lib handicap, yet if the race were a handicap he would have to give him at least 4A stone, which is the weight Bcbrikcff gave to those weighted on the minimum at. Napier Park. Miscount and By ron are the only other candidates that possess chances at all.
