V.A.T.C. SPRING MEETING. MALT KING IVINS C AULFIELD STAKES. Melbourne, Oct. 14. The Caulfield big spring meeting was opened to-day at Caulfield in very pleasant circumstances. The favourable season was responsible for picturesque surroundings and good tracks. The racing was, therefore, advantageous to the compel itors, awl was conducted under ideally spring-like conditions. The programme was particularly attractive. as the best horses recently racing at Randwiek were enabled to compete owing to the fact that there was no clashing In tween the meeting days. The results are looked for as a guide to ihe big events of the next fortnight, ft was the biggest Guinea. 1 ; crowd on record. The racing was good. There was a great struggle

between Malt King and Comedy King for the Caulfield Stakes, which provided the best finish seen between weight-for-age horses for some time. Results :—

1010 ’Welter. 7 furlongs.—Saltaire 1. Sharpshooter 2, Mountain Heather 3. Twenty-one runners. Won by a length and’a half ; a neck between second and third. Time 1.29 2-5. Debutant Stakes, 4 furlongs.—Golden Gauntlet I. Deeside 2. Ventura 3. Other starters were : Loch Amos, Golden Hop, Charlatan, Misspent, Tipple, Florence M.arasca. Deeside led at the distance, where Golden Gauntlet, who had been overhauling steadilv, passed him and won b.v a length and a half; ihreequarters of a length dividing second and third. Time -lOjsec. Caulfield Stakes, mile and a furlong.—Malt King 1. Comedy King 2, Ladv Medallist 3. The other starters were Parisian and Rifle. At the mile post Lady Medallist led, then came ( i.medv King and Malt King, with Rifle last. At the river side the New Zealander led by a length, Comedy ~ing being next, three lengths in fron't of Malt King. Comedy King the n spurted and reduced the lead to half a length at the turn into the straight, Malt King being two lengths away. Malt King then chased Comedy King, and the two Kings ran head and neck at the distance. There was great excitement over the finish, which resulted in favour of Malt King by a sheet head ; half a- neck separating second and third. Time, 1.54 J.

Ring wood Steeplechase, about 2 miles. —King’s County I, Vanguard 2, Don Q. 3. Ten starters. Banshee led to past the half mile, where King’s County, Vanguard and Don Q. passed, and King’s County won by several lengths ; half a length between second and third. Banshee pulled up Lame. Time 3.54. Caulfield Guineas.— Woolerina 1, Flaith 2, Popinjay 3. Other startes : Elvanitc, Sconser, Radiator, Durdans, Posio and Cisco. When the field had settled down Popinjay was leading by three lengths, followed by Elvanitc, Sconser, Maith, Wool-ei-ina, Cisco, Radiator and Durdans in that order. Popinjay increased her lead to eight lengths, but Elvanite and Flaith. racing together, reduced the lead to four lengths along the river, Woolerina and Sconser lying next. Flaith caught Popinjay at the turn into the straight, but Woclcrina, coming along fast, cut down both and won by two lengths; a length and a half dividing second and third. Cisco was fourth. Then came Durdans and Radiator. Poiso was last all the way. Time 1.41.1. Toorah Handicap, 1 mile.—Motoa 1 Balmoral 2, Thistlebrook 3. Twelve runners. Motoa led all the way, with Balmoral always handy. Thistlebrook appeared at the turn. Mary Seaton was among the last four all the way.
