The “Daily Telegraph's” Madrid correspondent reports that the stiictcst censorship is observed in Portugal.. Correspondents are only allowed to telegraph what the Government wishes.

The Royalists smuggled 12,000 rifles and several cannon which were hidden in the mountains.

They have won over numerous gendarmes and customs officials in North Portugal.

Many officials rd’ high rank are favourable to the monarchy owing to the lack of discipline in the army.

Much money has been collected in Brazil in aid of the movement.

Spies informed the Government of the whereabouts of plotters, enabling them to make arrests. There are sympathisers throughout Portugal, including a thousand at Oporto. At least six thousand monarchists are now in gaol, including aristocrats, lawyers, officers, and priests. A number of Royalists escaped to the mountains, and are organising a smal ! army for guerilla warfare. CONF LI CTIN (1 REPORTS. (Received 5, 11.5 a.m.) London, Oct. 4. Ex-King Manuel has returned to London hurriedly from the country. The Royalists claim that the North of Portugal except Oporto is practically in the hands of. the Monarchists and several towns have proclaimed King Manuel. On the other hand it is officially stated in Lisbon that all is quiet in the North.
