LOCAL AND GENERAL.
The ordinary meeting of the Hastings Borough Council takes place this evening.
There was a “clean sheet” at the Napier Magistrate’s Court this morning.
A heavy fog hung over the sea at Napier this morning and. vessels in the bay- kept their fog horns going vigorously until the weather cleared.
At the Hastings Police Court this morning, before Mr. A. L. .1). Fraser J.P., Frederick John Nicholson for a second charge cf drunkenness witbin a fortnight, was fined 20/-, or in default 18 hours imprisonment. A tent, hammock displayed outside a draper’s shop attracted a lot of al lent ion at. Hastings to-day. The conti ixanee consists of a miniature lent suspended from two uprights like tlie ordinary hammock.
Mr. T. The chairman cf the County Council will meet Mr. H. S. Clark and other settlers of Greenmeadows tomorrow morning at 9.30 for the pur pose of discussing complaints regarding culverts which arc alleged to block natural water courses. The matter has been frequently before the Council.
Mr. W. A. Beddoe. Canadian Trade Commissioner at Aucklaand. visited Dargaville last Monday to deliver an address before the Kaipara Chambei- of Commerce. It has been suggested that good may result if the Hawke’s Bay Chambers of Commerce arranged for Mr. Beddoe to give addresses at Napier, Hastings aand Dannevirke.
In the Athenaeum Hall, Napier, tc-night Mr. David Jones will give the first of his addresses in this distiict. He has the reputation of being a fine public speaker with a most thorough knowledge of the subject? he deals with. All sections of the community are invited to be present, and we do not think he can fail to have a large attendance. The chair will be taken by Mr. AV. ,J. McGrath at 8 p.m.
The president of the Baptist Conference, Mr. R. Milligan, will deliver an address at Napier at 7.30 this evening. Mr. Milligan is a very popular man in the South Island and has been Mayor of Oamaru for six successive years, in addition to being chairman of the Harbour Board for some time. He is now a candidate for Parliament. Some very interesting questions will be discussed in his address, at the conclusion of which questions may be asked. The annual general meeting of the Hawke’s Bay head centre, Napier branch, of the Royal Life-saving Society will be held in Abbott’s Hall, Napier, at 8 o’clock to-morrow evening. The business before the meeting will be to receive the annual repc rt and balance sheet and general. All members and others interested in this work are specially invited to attend. Mr. t'. Douglas, seeretar.v of the Hawke’s Bay Agricultural and Pastoral Society, reports that the entries for the forthcoming spring show are considerably in excess of those for last year. Yesterday all entries closed, and last night it was ascertained that there are 200 more than on the closing day for the same show last year while there are still a number of entries to be received from the secretaries of other agricultural and pastoral societies. The entries of horses are very good. Mr. Eustace Lane has given the following notice of motion for the next quarterly meeting of the Hast ings branch of the N.Z. Farmers' I nion. which is to lie held in the Oddfellows Hall. Hastings, on Monday afternoon next : "That in the opinion of this branch of the Farmers Unicm the Land Settlement Proposals contained in the Financial Statement are impracticable, empty and unsatisfying, and the attention of the Government lie drawn to the fact that its amendments to the Land Ri sumption Puller contained in the 1908 Act inserted 'to protect the owners’ interests’ have completely emasculated its power.’’
A rumour has been persistently circulated in Napier to-day that accused, charged with the robbery from the Napier Borough Council, had made a confession. On enquiry we learn that no confession has been made. The silver cup presented by Mr. F. L. Bone to the Hastings Fire Brigade for annual competition amongst members is at present on view' in Mr. J. D. Donovan's window. Last night’s meeting of the St. Andrew’s Literary and Debating Society took the form of a Shakespearean night. "The Merchant of Venice” being given as a reading. All the characters were represented, the parts were well sustained in each instance, Mr. D. Ford’s interpretation of Shylock being especially convincing.
