That popular racing fixture of the l cur, the Spring meeting of lit*' Hawke's Bay Jockey Club, will takeplace on the Hastings raet'eourse tomorr<;w. Niurty-om: liorscs have been paid up imr 111 the progr.'uimie
of eight: races, and an average of slightly over II for each race cannot by any means he termed a ieeble response from owners tor the onc-day fixture. The &>ring Handicap, which has always' been a popular ( vent, has filled poorly this year, only six meeting the final payment. Nor is tfie small acceptance the sole regettable facto)', but to find only cne candidate in the race that is also engaged in tlie »" T Zealand Cup is something almost ■ 1 tiol'anl in the history of the event. liable guide for locating the wmj;er of the big two-mile evert tim y t ar. and the only redeemin' feaiure .<f the race this year is that < I’oldfirdrr. who has been either first or second favourite ever since nominations closed for the New Zealand Cup, is engaged in to-morrow s big handicap. The class opposed to him is not strong, and if he should beat them easily it will not be a test severe enough to give one an idea of his prospects at Riecarton in November. However, Voetgang, Ariom \'i have been going well on the tracks and may be capable l of making Goldfmdcr do his best at the finish of the Ij mile handicap. The course proper is in fast condition and all that is wanted is the Rev. Bates’ assurance that Hawke’s Bay is to be favoured with a sunny day to-mor-row to attract a large attendance at the racecourse. The Hastings Stakes, Hawke's Bay Guineas and Spring Handicap, all on the one day , should provide sport that will be worth going many miles to see. THE CONTESTANTri.
Proceedings will commence wiih the Tomoaua Hack Handicap Hurdles, in which Espatero and Donzel have best credentials. The former beat a much better class at Wanganui on Thursday last, and with all his weight he will take no end of l>( -;ting. Moi'c.'imbc, who has never yet si ailed in a hurdle race, is very fast on the Hat, ami if he takes kindly to racing over battens he will have to be reckoned with. Among the light weights Longboat appears to have the best chance. The Flaxmcre Hack Handicap has att rach d Di acceptors, and seven of the number have won races. San JTuie and Vega are both very well, ami they should be capable of putting up fast time v. ith the weights alloted t hem. has. not filled well ami the class, with Tim Sprmg liaudieap of J'; miles Hie exception of Goldfindcr. is. by no means a strong one. ( h.’cf interest in Ihe event will bo centred in the running of Goldfinder, who has a strong army of supporters in this district for the New Zealand Cup. to be run lor next month. He will have ()B> more to carry to-morrow than what Im is burdened with at Ricearton, and if he should prevail' his poundage in the Now ZcaCutd ( up will no! be increased, as no penalty is .attaeln d to the winning of Hie ripi im; 11 ’tiidicap . The rcsin'ctable total of 15 have nu t Ibe acceptance in the XVaipatu Hack Handicap, and the class engaged is a good one. Gold Circle and Altear are rightly at the top of the handicap, and with eight winners of races in the event the result appears open. Altear was a good two-year-old and has commenced well this season as a Ihree-year-old, and as lie comes from such a strong stable he will be sure of plenty of support on the totalizator. Composed is galloping well, but he is such a slow beginner ami an unlucky horse that it will not do for a race over 6 furlongs. He would be much better suited if the race were over a mile course.
Formulate and Ovation arc a good pair engaged in the Maiden Hack Race that are also to be found among the acceptors tor the Hawke s Bay Guineas. With Merrimac ami V. ar Scare in the field the race should be an interesting one. Ngakau has been doing well c-n the tracks, but he does not appear capable of giving weight away to those already mentioned. The Hawke's Bay Guineas promises to be a great race, and the Hon. J. L). Ormond holds a strong hand with Miscount and Ainsdale. The foiinei- was little, if anything, behind the top notchers last season, am! his run in the Wanganui Guineas on Thursday was full of merit. Royal Scotch may have been improved with racing both days at Wanganui, and he would not have to be benefit ted to any great ext ent to turn the tables on Miscount. Our Queen is a speedy mare ami will be sure to take part in making the pace.
Tim Hastings Stakes, the first two-year-old race ot the season in Hawke's Bay. has attracted runners from outside the district, Gnome from Christchurch, Vocation from the XVairarapa, and Prince Soult from Auckland. Beldane and Glade are locally bred and owned, and are the most'promising of the Hawke’s Bay youngsters. Prince Soult: being the only one engaged that lias started in a race, the winner will bo hard to find.
The presence of Bobrikoff m Hie Final Handicap makes that race full of interest, for everyone likes to see the champion gallop. If he is at his best he will give a good account of himself, for 10.-l is a weight he can handle over 6 furlongs. Bliss is next on the list with. 8.4 ami is a much quicker* beginner than Bobrikoff. 80.-fie and" Blm* Lake are a fast pair, ami they slmuhl be able to get a substantial had on the others over the first four furlongs that will take some making up. Special trains will bo running at intervals convenient for visitors to the meeting.
