HAWKE’S BAY PRESBYTERY.

The bi-mc-nthly meeting cf tin Hawke's Bay 'Presbytery was held in St. Paul’s Schoolroom, Napier, yesterday. Sevcrunt : Revs. T. Tait, (moderator), J. A. Asher (clerk), P. Ramsay, W. Waugh, F. Tucker, R. Catherw .ood and W. McDonald. Elders: F. W. Craig, P. Burr, J. Anderson. Elliott and M. McLeod Apolegies were received from Revs. W. Grant, A. Grant and AV. Blair. A letter was received from Rev. Wm. Gram on the success of the congregational rally cf non-chnrch going Presbyterians, and commending the

.rheme to other congregations. An overture to the General Assembly frc-m G-isbcrne session re the questions put to ministers and office hearers, after i.everal amendments, war. sent e:i tc, the Assembly. Revs. XV. Grant and R. Blair with Mr. McLeod wore appointed to support the overture.

The following returns on Book ol Praise were read -Waipukuraa congregation for “Hymning” ; Matawhero. Pdrt Ahuriri, Hastings, Taradalc, Gisborne. Napier, Ormond and Havelci-k i:i favour of “Bock of Praise.” The Presbytery agreed to the re-;-i mmcmlations of Assemblies, etc., regarding the N.S.W. scheme of religion:: instruction in State schools. It was agreed that Home Mission Statiom; should be opened by Presbyteries without first consulting the Church Extension Committee,‘ also that the‘-e stations have all the repi < Tentative privileges e.f ordinary congregatiems.

The Rets. Asher, Caiherwood, W. M. (Irani, A. Grant, P. Ramsay ami 1". Tait were appointed representatives to the Assembly in Dunedin, al-.> Elders M. McLeod. P. Burr, A. Jones and J. M . Craig. The Presbytery placed on record an expression of its great, satisfacJoii that the Gisborne congregation has secured the scry ices of Miss Lahore, a trained deaconess, to assist thi" minister. The ordination of the deaconess yvas fixed f .r October 2sth at the morning services, the Rev. A. Grant to preside. Rev. Catherwood to preach. Rev. Blair to effer ordination prayer and Rev. Pattison to address the deaconess.

The following resolution was proposed by the Rev. P. Ramsay and carried unanimously: “Whereas the General Assembly lias maintained consistently for many years that the liqtrnr traffic is hurtful to the people economically. physically, socially mo: ally, and spiritually, the Assembly calls upon the elders, managers ministers and adherents within its bounds to carry out the will of the Assembly by voting at the next poll in favour of No-license in the issue of local option and also National Prohibition : whereas the General Assembly at its last meeting asked tbit sessions and congregations should set their ministers free as far as possible previous to the general (lection to devote their time to the furtherance of No-license, the Presbytery calls the favourable attention of kirk sessions and congregations to that resolution. The Assembly also expresses its great satisfaction with the motion carried unanimously so favourable to Nc-license by the Provincial Synod of the Anglican Church nt a recent meeting i:i Napier.”

The Rev. P. Ramsay gave notice to move at next meeting: "That he cause of the serious unrest threatening ( ven social disaster due to great differences between Capital and Labour the Presbytery enjoins upon all ministers the duty of making themselves acquainted with, the facts ami (..mdit' ms < f the strife that they may be able to speak and act so as to bring into this sea of trouble the uascmable humane spirit of the Croat Master of ail. the Lord Jesus ; ’hrist.”
