THE FIRST LABOUR PARTY.
Tx view of the increasi d activity which is manifesting 'tsclf in labour circles it is interesting to recall a little history regarding what has been called the First Labour Party in New Zealand. Speaking some years ago Mr. AV. W. Tanner, the tlicii member for Avon, deserbed himself as "The Last of the Mohicans” so far as the first Labour Party in the New Zealand Parli.aim nt was concerned. On August 27, 189(1, the maritime strike was declared ami its failure to attain its pirinarv objects deepened the miprtssion that if the conflict was transferred from the committee rf.mn of the Trades Union to the halls of Parliament greater things might be achievid. Al the general election in December of the same year the following candidates were returned.as supporters of Labour:— Du in din, Mr. D. Pinkerton (bootmaker) ; Peninsular. Mr. W. Earnshaw (brass-founder) ; Wairiui. Mr. T. L. Buick (working carpenter); Invercargill. Air. J. M . Kelly (tailor) . Heathcote. Mr. AV. AV. Tanner (bootmaker). These five, together with Air. E. Sandford (compositor), who was returned for Christchurch at a by-f lection in were the men who formed the first actual Labour lentingent in the New Zealand Parliament. None of these men now hold seats.
