Air. Rolps has been elected Mayor of New York.

Air. F. Fisher, a member of the Palmerston post office staff, has ceived word of his transfer to AA a>pukurau. He proceeds to that town on Saturday next.

Mr. Percy Miles, of the Napie.' Telegraph Office, has been promoted to the engineers branch of the service, anil vvill in future be stationed at AVellington.

Mr. J. M. Williams, who has for several years held a position ,on the staff of the Napier Telegraph Office, has received notification of his transfer to the AVellington office.

Mr. J. S. Lomas, 8.A.. at present English master at the Napier Boys High School, has been appointed assistant mathematical master at Wellington College. Air. Jackson Palmer, Chief Judge of the Native Land Court, who has been visiting England anil the Continent, returned to New Zealand by the Maheno after about seven months’ absence.

The Rev. John Hobbs, for manyyears vicar of St. Matthew s Church, Hastings, will preach in that church on Sunday evening next. Mr. Hobbs vvill be in Hastings from Friday to Monday and hopes to see all his old friends during his brief visit. The Napier staff of the Tyser Line assembled yesterday ‘afternoon to bid good-bye to one of their number, Mr. A. C. Galbraith, who left. Napier this morning on a trip to Great. Britain. On their behalf Mr. J. Sandtmann presented Mr. Galbraith with a travelling trunk, and wished him every future success.

Madame Melba was delighted last Friday night with Miss Resina Buckman’s performance of Mnsetta in “La Boheme,” at Sydney. At the close of the performance the diva congratulated the New Zealand soprano warmly on her singing and acting, saying that she was one of the best Musettas she had ever heard. Madame Melba further stater that she had decided to take Miss Buckman to London with her on het return from. Australia, and would arrange that she, apepar at Covent Garden.

Previous to the meeting of the Napier Competitions Society last night the Executive met and presented Mrs R. C. Wright (wife of the secretary) with a handsome diamond ring. This was done with the object of giving Mrs Wright some token of the high appreciation of Mr Wright’s services to the Society. Mr. Plowman, in making the presentation, sjoke in the warmest terms of the splendid work gratuitously perform ed by Mr. Wright, who had refused to take any remuneration whatever for his exceptional efforts to secure the success of the competitions. The following is the text of the illuminated address which is to be presented to Mr. R. C. M right, secretary of the Napier Competitions Society: —R. C.
