Notwithstanding the wretched weather the Hastings Yorkshire So ciety had a most suei i-ssfnl openitig night in the Oddfellows Hall lasi evening, am! judging by the allend ance (winch included a contingent from Napier) and the good fare pro vided. the society promises to become a popular institution as a mill inm for social intercourse.
The proceedings took the form ot a si.i-ial. After listening to the opening address by the president (Mr. E. tClarkson) the company sat down at the card tables where euchre, progressive five hundred, i and other games of a like nature i were indulged m till Io o dock. '1 h< ( pleasures of the evening were added ‘ to bv the rendering of musical items i by the f*>llowing ladies and gentlemen :• Pianol’ort e .*elo. Mr. I'ell : : pianoforte duet. Miss Campbell ami .Mr. Fell : Yorkshire readings. Mr. i Foster Brook and Mr. Clarkson ; ? pianoforte solo Miss Monteith ; male quartette, Messrs Avtson. J. E. Hall. iH. Knight ami I-. A inkers : vocal solos. Misses Moulton and Vickers, Mrs Duncan (Napier). Messrs Park i (Napier). Thomson (Napier). Captain ; Whitely ami Jennings (Napier); recitation. Mr. Hartley (Nepier); mus-j icttl sketch, Mr. P. W. Tombs; and j a nnisiial monologue. Mr. Avison., Mr. Fell and Mr. Tombs play ed the j ac<-- lupaniment s. An excellent sup-| per was provided by the ladies, and | ofter this had been done full justice, to. dancing was commenced. Messrs, Tombs anil Avison provided Ihe j music. Mr. Clarkson acted as M.C. ; During the supper interval. Mr. | Slia:[>. president of the Napier So-i ciety. congratulated the Society on their auspicous opening] and wished them a prosperous car-, cer. After thanking the guests for | their lavish hospitality, Mr. Sharp, i xtemled a hearty invitation Io the, Hastings members to the social to | be given by the Napier Society next I month. |

The proceedings terminated shorfIv after midnight with the singing of Auld Lang Syne.” The secretarial duties were ablycarried out by Mr. (). D. Avison, and his efforts and those ol the com mittee contributed in a large degree to the suv-cess ol the social. A word of thanks is also dm- Io Messrs Tombs and Grubb for tin- loan of furniture.
