Mr. W. G. Moddings, late inspector of telegraphs at Auckland, died at his residence. Tawa road, Beresford Park, One Tree Hill, near Onehunga. on Saturday morning, aged 67 vears.
Captain Thomas Spedding. weli known in the New Zealand mercantile marine service, and kite captain m the China Merchants’ Steeam Navigation Coinpanv. died in the general hospital, Shanghai, on August S)th last, aged s(i .vears. He was second officer of the Union Steam Ship Company’s Tara wertt when that steamer was first brought out from Home, and had served on several oi the company’s vessels. Some years ago he left New Zealand to join the China Merchants’ S.N. Company.
At last night’s meeting of the Operatic Society, the society’s property holder, Mr. Talbot, was presented with a watch chain, having a gold and greenstone pendant at tar-bed, as a token of the appreciation in which he was held by the members. Mr. G. Morley, the president, made Ihe presentat ion an 1 eu logised the valuable work Mr. Calbot had done in the recent, performance of "The Runaway Girl.” In reply, Mr. Talbot said that ir, gave him great pleasure to use his experience as professional aid in amateur performances.
