DREDGING THE HARBOUR
CHARTER OF WELLINGTON DREDGE.

At to-day's meeting of the Napier Harbour Board the Chairman reported what had been done by the committee which waited on the Wellington Harbour Board re hire of a dredge. He estimated the cost to the Napier Board was as follows:— Rent per month £5OO, insurance £ 150, wages of crews £475/12/8, house allowance for crew £ll6, repairs rnd maintenance £ 198, coal (60 tons per week) £312, water, oil, etc.. £lOO, accident insurance on crew £25 : total l2 8. In addition there would be two survey fees in WeMingion £2O, half of two umpires’ fees £lo, freight, on spare parts £2O, ret urn fares for : ay 17 of a crew £43—total extras £93. These latter figures were only e: timated. Insurance risk had been reduced to £.30,000 and effected. On the motion of Mr. Ellison the action of the committee was confirmed.
Some discussion then took place upon the time and place where the dredge should start work. Some members held that the dredge should start work outside on the shoal, while some held (Mr. Lane particularly) that work, should be started I early on reclamation. I On the motion of Mr. Chambers it was resolved that the charter of the dredge commence on October 25th, and that the Wellington Board be ask-d to allow their superintendent to visit Napier at the earliest oppertunity to advise the Board as to the best way of getting to work. Messrs. Jull, Niven, Lane, McGrath, Ellison, Clark, and Parsons were appointed a committee to direct operations for the dredging, soundings, etc.
