ST. ANDREW'S UNIVERSITY.

LORI) ROSEBERY INSTALLED RECTOR.

(Received 16, 8.5 a..) m London, Sept. 15.

Lord Rosebery has been installed rector of St. Andrews. He reviewed the history of the University from the barbaris m prevailing in Scotland 500 years ago to the conditions of the present day-, when there was some danger of Scotland becoming a spoon-fed nation. He emphasised the growth of toleration, the gradual supression of violence by law. When he averaged the centuries he was inclined to take a hopeful view of the future. He was persuaded there was a constant movement for the better in the world.

Representatives of many foreign, overseas, and British I niversities. and learned societies presented addresses. Otago was represented byProfessor Sale, and the University of New Zealand by Professor James Hay.
