As -i rc .-nit of the ingot nit ions which bate bf-iii proceeding bctwcei) the Napier Borough Conned and the Hawke’s Bay County Council e<:ncc ruing the boundaries of the Naph r abat to'r dislrict, a meeting is tn be htld in the Borough Council Chambers at II a.m. on Wednesday. 2bth inst.. to discuss the question further. Air. Brakes, representing the Agricultural Department, will also be present. This morning we wrre ( ’tabled t< look at a map showing the disirici proposed for the Napier Abattoirs, and although fully ri cognising the necessity for a big town like Napier having efficient safeguards and proper compulsory support in the running of an up-i odatc slaughterhouse, it must never thcless, be admitted that the boundaries proposed tire sufficiently extensive to leave room for much criti cism. It is proposed at present that the boundary of the abattoir district should be from lite Esk river oil the norlh to tin? Clive Gi ange-llastings road on the south. Can it lie reasonably eia : mc.l lli-et ib.is is a fair boundary with l !) wh'eh to compel conceutration •' Under tins arrangement butchers, say at Pctane. would have to drive stock all the way to Awatotc, to be :--laughU-red, and cart the carcases back to Pctane for sale. This : s altogcthi v unreasonable, and the spirit of the law could be carried out just, as well if proper supervision were made of the slaughtering at P.- tane. The prevision of abattoirs was enft H ii w : tli the ; dea of providing pure meat to the centres of population and not w>lh the object of harassing outlying districts with unnrei s.sary restrictions. Wo should advise those persons interested to be pv( sent at the meeting on Vvednesday.
