A cable message states that Lord Gladstone was cordially welcomed at Buluwayo.
Mr. R. Bishop left Napier by the express train this morning on a three weeks holiday to Christchurch.
A Press Association message announces the death of Mr. F. Lassettcr, head of the firm of Lasscttcr and Co., Sydney. Mr. Anthony YVilding, the world’s champion tennis player, has become engaged to a daughter of Air. J. B. Joel, one of London’s financial magnates.
Air. D. N. Millan, district engineer, is at present in the back country. He will meet a deputation at Posui on Friday dealing with County road matters.
Air. K. N. H. Browne, the Deputy Official Assignee for Napier, was this morning admitted as a solicitor of the Supreme Court by the Chief Justice on the motion of Air. Sproule. The London “Standard” states that the Rev. Hearn Russell Wakefield, of Norwich, has succcsded the Rt. Rev. Gore, as Bishop cf Birmingham.
Mr. C. J. Bilton has received notice cf his promotion from the posision of accountant at the Napier branch of the Rank of New Zealand to that of mnnngtr at the Tcmuka branch.
A reminder is given of the organ recital in St. John’s Cathedral, Napier, this evening, when Air. H. G. Weber will play a high class programme of music specially written for the organ. Cable news has been received that Dr. Kenneth Mackenzie, son of the Hon. T. Mackenzie .obtained a gold medal at Edinburgh I niversity for his thesis on the mammary gland, wich he wrote as part of his qualification for the AI.D. degree. This is one cf the highest honours obtainable for a student at Edinburgh.
Private advice was received in Amekland on Monday by Mr. H. B. Massey that Air. Theo. Bowling, the well-known Auckland sportsman, died at Christchurch on Saturday evening. Mr. Bowling left Auckland for Christchurch last memth to see bis horse Antarctic compete at the C.J.C. National meeting, ami jusl after the gathering concluded, was in such a weak sttito of health that bo had to be removed to a private borpital. Dcpitc every aUcntion he gradually sank ,and the end came on Saturday. Mr. Bowling has been in indifferent health forsome lime, and his death was net unexpected. The body will be taken to Auckland for interment.
