MINERS’ DISEASE.

A DISTINCTION BETWEEN CONSUMPTION. Auckland, Sept. 4. At the Mines Commission this morning, Dr. Guinness gave evidence on the miners’ disease. He said there was a distinction lietween consumption an I miners’ disease. At Waihi in some cases the tuberculi which was found was not due to the miners’ disease complaint, but was introduced in connection with it. He knew one family at Waihi, several of whom had died from miners’ complaint. All that family, however, had tubercule. Men whom lie had advised to quit mining had practically recovered from miners’ disease. The best preventives were improved ventilation and sanitary conveniences, less inhalation of candle smoke and smoke from blasting, also the segregation of tubercular patients.
