THE COMING ELECTION

HAWKE'S BAY SEAT. MR. H. M. CAMPBELL'S CANDIDATURE. A combined meeting of those interested in Mr. H. M. Campb'll’s candidature, together with their wives and lady friends, was held last evening in St. Matthew’s Hall. Hastings. There were 50 present. Mr. G. Land occupied the chair. The chairman briefly touched upon the alteration of the boundaries of the elect orate and stilted that although somewhat changed they would not have any material effect on Ihe result of Mr. Campbell'!; sue*. ess at the polls. Mr. Campbell, who was re :-d wit h applause, briefly address -d the meeting, stating that in the s-'o.-jl parts of the electorate in whim l.< had held meetings the promise and signs of support were more ‘ban gratifying. He outlined his programme for the next week, ami also impressed on those present the absolute necessity of playing the game and playing fair. The ladies present (23) decided to form themselves into a committee ;tnd to support Mr. Campbell in the campaign for reform and good *iovernment.

The*. f -secretary reported that 1- tters from all parts of the electorate had been received promising s ipport and congratulating .Mr. Campbell as a Hawke’s Buy born v >rng man, on his public spirited ac-H 11 in coming out in the interests of those he had lived among all his life : and promising -him every support.

A pleasing interlude occurred when by special request the chairman presented Mrs. Campbell with a volume De Luxe of Mr. D. M. Ross’ latest publication, of prose and verse, entitled “Hearts of the Pure,’’ as an expression of the esteem the recipient and her husband are held in by their friends and supporters. Mrs. Campbell bowed her acknowledgement amid applause. Several names were added to the committee. A vote of thanks to the chairman terminated the meeting. MR. FRASER ON THE SICK LIST. Although Mr. A. L. D. Fraser has had a most unpleasant attack of bronchitis, says the “Wairoa Guardian.” lie is with careful and kindly atrention improving. and hopes with a snide of spring to be fit for the political fray towards the end 6f the week. He has received many telegrams of friendly sympathy from all parts of the electorate, with hopes of a speedy recovery. Among thiee specially appreciatedby Mr. Fraser was a wire from Mr. IL M. Campbell,. Opposition candidate, voiiing.a friendly spirit.. Mr. Fraser in replying with thanks, added that thoughtfulness as shown by Mr. Campbell was often mole cheering and beneficial than doctors’ prescriptions. If Mr. Fraser continues to improve in health as a! present, he should be able to give his promised address in four or five days ’time. Mrs. Fraser is expected 10 arrive by the next boat.
