NAPIER PARK RACING CLUB.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—As a member who was present at the annual meeting of the Napier Park Racing Club, like “A Disgusted Member,” I feel it my duty to protest against the manner in which the meeting was. conducted. Mr. McVay as chairman not only refused to put Mr. Fox’s motion in regard to increase in the secretarys salary to the meeting, but also declined to put a second resolution, "That it be a recommendation to the ingoing committee to increase the secretary’s salary.” What is an annual meeting for ? Can Mr. McVay tell us what business is to be transacted thereat ’ Is it. a meeting simply to move the adoption of the report and balance-sheet and elect a committee, etc. ? Of course not. The president, vice-president, and treasurer are elected during the pleasure of the club. Why should they not be elected annually, as is the custom of the majority of other clubs? This course is also adopted by the H.B. Jockey Club. The rules distinctly set out what business may be transacted at the annual meeting, and among them provision is made for transacting general business. Can Mr. McVay tell us what is general business? Another matter which cropped up at yesterday’s meeting, and objected to by a member, was the fact that a vote had been recorded by a nonmember, who, after he had voted, was put up for election as a member. Mr. McVay’s attention was drawn to the fact more than once, but he refrained from taking any action. The member’ referred to was subsequently elected an honorary member. If this sort of conduct on the part of a chairman is allowed to go on unchecked, it will be quite unnecessary to elect a committee or any other officials. As a solution of the whole difficulty, why not alter the rules to permit Mr. McVay to run the whole concern ? Taking his recent action, at the general meeting referred to, as indicating the lines on which he would like to conduct the affairs of the club, it appears to me to be nothing but sheer waste of time to call annual meetings for the purpose of giving the members an opportunity of discussing matters which wpuld assist the committee, and be a benefit to the club as well. —I am, etc.,
