HOCKEY.

S ATI ’RDA Y’ S MATCHES.

Three excellent games were played on Saturday. The only senior game in Hastings was played on the Heretaunga Ground, and the Old Boys succeeded in again retaining the Banner.

BIBLE CLASS (2) v. CIVIL SER-

VICE (2).

This was an even game, though Bible Class had slightly the upper hand. Thompson scored both goals for the winners, whilst Hore scored for the Civil Service. The game was controlled by Messrs. King and Melhuish.

MERCANTILE (3) v. HASTINGS (2) This game, played on Nelson Park, was an exceedingly interesting one. In the first spell Anderson scored for the winners twice, and Seigreen once for Hastings. In the second spell Mahoney scored for Hastings, and Holland for Mercs. No further score resulted. Messrs. Foley and Thomas acted as empires.

HERETAUNGA OLD BOYS (2) v. NAPIER (I).

This was a banner match and was a fine hard game played in a

friendly spirit. Heretaunga set the pace from the start and things were very lively throughout. Heretaunga missed scoring on several occasions and from some scrappy play Dixon shot the ball from near the back line to Grange, who was standing at the front of the goal and by a nippy shot Grange netted the leather, drawing first blood for Napier. From this on till half-time some lively play was witnessed, but half-time sounded without any further score.

On resuming the Old Boys’ forwards played with fine dash and seemed to find no difficulty in beating Napier backs. E. Mclvor, after a deal of hard work, managed to find the net and shortly after his brother managed to notch a beauty from the middle of the circle. Heretaunga forwards worked hard for a further score but He ale’s shot went wide. "When time was called the score was in favour of Old Boys by one, goal and the play in midfield . N apier might have done better had they fed their left wing, as Shirley looks for work and he is certainly a dangerous man. Napier’s forwards are plodders but their backs have gone off. Ellison played a fine game for Old Boys. Messrs. R. Fail and McGoldrick refereed.

B GRADE

ST. MATTHEWS (4) v. HAST-

INGS (0)

Hastings were only able to put nine men in the field against St. Matthews at Cornwall Park on Saturday, nevertheless they played a good fast- game and l several times were very close to scoring. Their defence was also sound, and had they had a full team the result might have been the other way. St. Matthew’s played a fair game but were greatly inclined to get off-side ,owing to Hastings only playing two backs . Crawford (2) v. Masters (2) .score dfor the winners. Mr. J. Johnston was a capable and impartial referee.

Junior Bible Class forfeited to St .Matthews.

LADIES’ REPRESENTATIVES.

A practice match was played on Nelson Park between the representatives and another team. The game was not interesting, and resulted in a win for the Reps. Mr. G. R. King was umpire.

SIX-A-SI DE TO URN AMENT

The Hastings six-a-side tournament promises to be a huge success. judging by the number of entries received. Players who have not yet entered are reminded that the entries close to-night at six o’clock with Messrs. A. Cassin, F. Bullick, McGoldrick.
