MUNICIPAL EMPLOYEES.

THE WAGES QUESTION.

[per press association, j

Christel:arch, Aug. 17

Regarding the insrease of sixpence per day in the wages of cerI tain of the City Council's employ- > ees, the Mayor, Mr. J. J. Dougall states :—“For a considerable time ; past there has been an agitation i to increase the rate of wages, and from the time of the last election j it has been quite evident that the ; question would have to be faced i by the present council. The council j apparently did not wish to set up ! any standard of wage which would i conflict with the award rate, but ;it thought an extra payment of ; sixpence a day to married men i who were receiving eight shillings ' a day or less would not be a viola- ' tion of any principle, while it would i confer a benefit upon a class of i men who were very conscientious in the discharge of their duties and who were entitled w such remuneration as the council could grant them. The resolution adopted was not altogether unanimous, but it ; was very nearly so. So far as I i know there is no intention on the part of the council to make a gen- ! eral rise in wages all round, and it | is hoped that what has been done ! will settle any question between I the council and its employee's' for a i considerable time to come. The ! increase involved is about £1230 a j year.”
