CHRISTCHURCH NORTH SEAT

MR. ISITT WINS BY 708 VOTES

PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.

Christchurch, Aug. 17. by-election for Christchurch North took place to-day in fine weather. The polling was fairly heavy, 6920 out of 10,000 on the roll recording their votes as compared with 7894 (Mr. T. E. Taylor 4338, Mr. C. M. Gray 2700 and Mr. R. J. Eci oy d 856) at the last general election. The corrected final result is:—

Mr. L. M. Isitt 3814 Mr. J. D. Hall 3106

Majority- for Mr. Isitt 708

The results were got in very promptly, the last coming to hand shortly after eight o’clock. All. Hall, in a speech, stated that the manner in which those who had worked for him had done their work led him to believe that the figures would he altered in two months' time when, as far as he was concerned, he would give them an opportunity of deciding whether or not that should be the case.

Mr. Isitt said he regarded the victory as a tribute to their dead leader. It was no secret that the C onsen ative forces had been concentrated upon the struggle, and the Conservatives took it that if they non the election it would be evidence of a turn of the tide of public opinion. They had failed, and he nonestly believed that the day had passed for legislation of the spirit and character that the ( onservatives believed was for the gcod of the Dominion.
