PARLIAMENTARY SCENE.
IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA
“YOU ARE AN INFERNAL SCROUNDREL.”
Adelaide, Aug. 1 I
In the Legislative Council to-day Mr. A. W Styles, on an informal motion, made a speech in which he took exception to the conduct of the chairman. Mr. B. A. Moulden. in examining a witness named Ward, who gave evidence* before the* seiect committee on the alleged electoral irregularities on the previous evening.
The Minister for Agriculture : Why did you allow the chairman to browbeat you ? Why don’t you go for him baldheaded ? It was contemptible.
Air. Styles said he was satisfied Ward would have received much more consideration from a duly installed judicial 'Bench than he did from the chairman of the commission. He entered his protest, and asked to be relieved from his position on the select committee, and somebody appointed in his stead. A heated debate followed.
The Minister for Agriculture did not reply to a. question by Mr. J. S. Bice. Mr. J. S. Bice said: “You are an absolute shuffler.” And later: “ You are an absolute affront to an honest man.”
The Minister for Agriculture (with great passion): You are an infernal scoundrel. (Hon. members: Shame shame.)
Mr. A. Von Doussa : I would not like to die in the same paddock as vou.
Both Mr. Bice and the Minister had to withdraw. Mr. J. H. Howe, a member of the select committee, said in future he would not serve on any committee with Mr. Sykes. Notwithstanding the request of the Chief Secretary, Mr. Styles said he would still send in his resignation. ,
