NEW ZEALAND RUGBY UNION MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE.

Wellington. Aug. 10.

The management committee of the New Zealand Rugby Union met to-night. The Auckland Union are finding that the Ranfurly Shield entails upon them a responsibility which they find irksome. The rules regarding challenges for the shield make it obligatory on the holders to

day any teams shallenging on any lays available, and the result is .hat. the local cup fixtures would, if theunionpermittedjbe seriously incrfercd with. They have received •hallenge.s from South Auckland, Poverty Bay, and Marlborough, tone of which unions can put a :eam in the field which might have i reasonable chance of taking away .he shield. The visiting teams to Auckland get a liberal share of the and there is more than a suspicion that challenges are meant .’or nothing more than to give the earns a cheap trip. Dates have >een fixed for South Auckland and Poverty Bay. but the Auckland Union have not offered a Saturday to Marlborough. This year the cup fixtures at Auckland are interesting. and the local union think it is very hard to be compelled to give up their own good games, and, in.‘idcntally. good gates, for the sake, of satisfying frivolous challenges. An Auckland team also is to go on iour this year, and they cannot play any more challenge games until late in September. This is open to the serious objection that the grounds at Auckland are too hard for winj ter games at the end of September. I These matters were discussed by | the committee, and it was argued j by Mr Dixon on behalf of Auckland i .hat his team should not be asked Lo play more than two special I . hallenge matches this year. The ’ Marlborough Union sent in their Lallenge through the New Zealand | Union because they had no reply j from Auckland.--It. was decided to ’ ask the Auckland Union to arrange, I if possible or convenient, a date tor I a match with Marlborough, say on ! September 23rd. i Wellington Union asked that, in j view of their playing the St. Pat- ! rick'.s-Wellington College match as

a curtain raiser to the country teams' match on Saturday, they would be given a larger share of the gate than 25 per cent. Their letter stated that the college match had never previously yielded a gate of less than £7O. Mr. Isaacs moved that 33;' per cent, be allowed, but an amendment to the effect that 25 per cent, only be allowed was carried.—lt was argued that the increased price of admission to be charged would increase Wellington’s share of the takings.—A further request that college boys be admitted for 6d was granted.

| In the former game great interI est centres, as Waimarama require [to win to give themselves a chance ito draw level with Kautuki, the I leaders of the junior championship | contest As Rovers have already, jin the scend round, vanquished • Kautuki ami Celtic, the win of the | coasters is by no means assured. j This match will act as a “ curtain raiser” to the Shield match, wherein the pick of Hastings and Waipawa County Sub-Unions will struggle for supremacy. Hastings will have even a stronger team than that which so ably extended Para : ta’s Native touring team, and as the southern team is admittedly a fine one a good day’s play is certain.
