Within another couple of years the great Keokuk dam, the largest in the world except the Assouan, will be completed, thus harnessing the Mississippi. By the power thus gained, equivalent to about a quarter of a million horse-power. Keokuk will become one of the largest power-distributing centres in the whole world. There will be power enough to light every public and private lamp, run every street car. and turn every factory wheel in practically every Mississippi Valley town from St. Paul in the north to St. Louis in the south. Already contracts have been signed for the transmission of 60.000 horse-power to St. Louis, a distance of 175 miles south, to run the street cars and light the streets of that city. Negotiations are now in progress of completion to transmit the power north and south, east and west, from St.. Paul. It will be the most marvellous electrical engineering feat yet achieved in America or elsewhere.
It is proposed to sink three new wells in Nelson Park, Napier. Kt the present time there is one, but the water is allowed to run to waste. When these four are connected up with the receiving tanks in Vautier street, there will be no fear of the water supply failing when the dry weather comes on. The sinking of these wells ought to give the members of the Philosophical Institute a chance of making some original investigations as to the strata passed through.
