WELLINGTON (2U) v. NORTH ISLAND COUNTRY TEAM (2).

Wellington. Aug. 9

A match between Wellington and the North Island countty team was played to-day in glorious weather. There was a moderate attendance, and victory rested with the local team by 20 to nil. Moffatt, Bell, Mitchenson. Roberts .and Sotheran scored, Evenson converting Mitehenson’s try and kicking a goal from a mark. In the first spell the game was very even, the country forwards playing with great heart, following up. dribbling, and tackling in great style. The score was 6 to nil at half-time, the country team just missing scoring on several occasions. The country backs were very uncertain in fielding, kicking and passing. McKenzie being the chief delinquent. Mexted was the best back, and Carroll. Barry and Smith the best of a hard-working lot of forwards.

SOUTHLAND (14) v. SOUTH ISLAND (9).

Invercargill, Aug. 9.

The touring South Island football team played the third match of the tour here to-day against Southland, the home team winning by 14 to 9. Southland, with a strong wind in their favour, scored a penalty* goal within the first five minutes. Forde, the home half-back, next scored cleverly from the South Island twenty-five. The visitors then settled down, and Todd scored near the posts, Irving failing with the kick. Sheridan got over a few minutes later, but Irving again failed, and the spell ended 6 all. Southland was in difficulties at the opening of the second half, Richards scoring. Then Southland pushed with loose rushes, and Stead scored from a scrum near the corner, Martin failing with the kick. The game developed into a fast and interesting game. Forde made a beautiful opening for Southland, McNeece got over, and Martin converted. The visitors struggled hard, hut there was no further score, and j the game ended as above.

NEW SOUTH WALES (26) v. QUEENSLAND (14).

Brisbane. Aug. 9. : New South Wales defeated i Queensland by 26 to 14.

NORTHERN UNION

PETANE MAORI LEAGUE v. DANNEVIRKE. A fair number of spectators assembled to witness the above match played on McLean Park. Napier, yesterday afternoon. Petane kicked off. Play continued even for some time. From a penalty. Peter Heka for the local Maoris made a good but unsuccessful attempt at a goal. More even play followed, and Pat Pera, after a splendid run. scored in the corner. Heha’s kisk at goal failed. Daimevirke livened up, and pressed hard. A mark taken by the local Maoris sent the ball out of bounds, ami a scrum took place near the line. A Petane back relieved with a good kick. After some scrums near the half-way line, Jaeh Rati, for Dannevirke. made a good run, but was thrown out of bounds m ar the corner. The visitors defeneded will, and saved two almost certain scores. A passing rush by the visitors enabled J. Meihana to score after a tricky run. Puru took the kick and failed. Heha for the Petane Maoris attempted to kick a goal from the field, but failed. Bad

Martin for Dannevirke. got over, the kick failing, j H Kani. for Dannevirke. made a j good run, but failed in an attempt!at the goal from the field. Petane . made splendid rushes, but Dannej virke's full-back was too safe. Puru ’ again made a splenid run. but a Pe- ■ time man intercepted and took play ito the half-way line. The whistle j sounded with the scores : Dannej virke 17. Petane 3. I Mr. G. Proctor ably controlled j the game and promptly put down I any rough play.
