The mail via Vancouver which left Napier on the 24th July arrived in London on the 7th inst. and the mail via Suez which left Napier on the 29th June arrived in London on the sth inst.
The Mental Defectives Bill does not seem to be quite complete (says the Christchurch '.‘Evening News' ). It has no special clauses dealing with Socialists and those who object to military training. Since the installation of the steam pumping plant at the ejector tank in Munroe street, the work of the Napier Borough workmen has been made somewhat easier. but there is still a large volume of water to cope with.
The second term’s work at the Napier Technical College is now in full swing. The very satisfactory number of 40 new pupils has been' enrolled, and the new engineering' class is now in full swing. The; average attendance is three times j that of the corresponding term last, year, and generally the progress of! the college is most encouraging. |
A "start has been made in removing sheds, out-houses, etc., in Dr. Bernau’s property, where the Napier Municipal Theatre is to be erected.
The Tariff Committee of the Harbour Board held a lengthy sitting yesterday. There was no report for publication, but we understand that some recommendations will be made to the board regarding the haulage charges.
Tin- Hawke's Bay County Council is negotiating witli tlie Railway Department to ascertain on what terms shingle can be delivered at the Baki Paki station for the purpose of metalling Te Ante road. The limestone hitherto used upon thi- road has not proved very satisfactory, hence the proposed experiment with shingle.
It is proposed to sink three new wells in Nelson Park, Napier. At the present time there is one, but the water is allowed to run to waste. When these four are connected up with the receiving tanks in Vautier street, there will be no fear of the water supply failing when the dry weather comes on. The sinking of these wells ought to give the members of the Philosophical Institute a chance of making some original investigations as to the strata passed through.
Word was received in Hastings to-day that Mr. J. Parker’s dogs Sensation and Mosgiel Beauty had Been awarded first and second prizes respectively in all collie classes at the Christchurch Dog Show, thus winning a 50-guinea shield for the third year in succession. This shield now becomes the property of Mr. Parker. Other prizes won include a collar and medal and a club trophy. Sensation and Mosgiel Beauty were bred from the famous Mosgiel 11.. which Mr. Parker was unfortunate to lose some time ago.
