ENGINEERS’ LABOURERS STRIKE.
[PRESS ASSOCIATION. —COPYRIGHT]. London, Aug. 1. Three thousand five hundred engineers’ labourers have struck at Manchester for the minimum wage of £1 weekly. Nine thousand workmen are affected. NEWPORT STRIKE SETTLED. (Received 2, 10.40 a.m.) London, August 1. The Newport strike was settled after 22 hours conference. The agreement includes recognition of unions. BATHS FOR MINERS. (Received 2, 8.50 a.m.) London, Aug. 1. The House of Commons, in committee, rejected the clause making miners’ baths at pitheads compulsory.
LONDON DOCKERS OUT AGAIN
THE lONIC’S CARGO HUNG UP (Received 2, 9.20 a.m.) London, Aug. 1. There is a fresh strike of London dockers and allied workers. All the Tilbury docks are involved, except the Port of London Authority employees. Ten thousand are rendered idle, and the lonic is not able to unload her cargo of meat and fruit. The clerical staff enabled the passengers to secure their luggage. The P. and 0., Blue Funnel, and Shaw-Savill companies are affected. The men assert that the masters recently agreed to a uniform 8d per hour for all classes of dock workers, and that the masters now repudiate the agreement.
