The Fruit. Farms Settlement .Act, passed last session, is now in operation, and regulations have been gazetted. Applicants for allotments must not be less than 21 years of age, and the Commissioner of Crown Lands has been given power to inquire into the qualifications of any applicant, and to reject any application unless he is satisfied that the applicant is in a position to cultivate the allotment successfully. The lessee will be required to take up his residence on the allotment within a year from the date of selection, and thenceforwarel residence must be continuous for a period of ten years. Mr. Thomas Heath, orehardist at Stoke, Nelson, sent to England by the Waiwera a case of apples from his orchard. They were picked on February 1. which was some three weeks before the bulk of the fruit sent- from Nelson, and they were taken from Jonathan two-year-old trees. The excellent condition in which the apples arrived indicates that- early picking is a. great advantage in shipping apples from the Nelson district for London. Captain Charman, of the Waiwera, writing to Mr. Heath, under date London, May 5, says : “I am pleased to be able to report most favourably upon your apples. They are without exception in a perfect state of preservation, being kept at a temperature of from 40 to 45 degrees from February 20 last until they landed here on April 29, and I may say I do not think it possible to land fruit in a better condition than your case of apples.”
