The barque Puritan sprang a • leak on June 20th on her voyage from Newcastle to San Francisco . during a heavy gale about SOO mile's ; from Tahiti. Water gained on the barque rapidly and the pumps were ■kept going till June 27th, when a • furious gale was raging. The ves- ; sei was sinking fast, so it was deI cided to abandon her. i All hands, provided with water 1 and provisions, left the barque in I two boats. They kept together for j three days but on the third night ■ they became separated. The boat containing the first i mate, named Hatfield, and nine I men, disappeared, and has not since l been heard of. It is believed she ■ foundered with all hands. ; The second boat, containing ; Captain Chapman and Mr. Collins, j the second mate, and ten men. arj rived at Tahiti on June 14th. ; Unfortunately water ran short ! during the voyage and the boat’s ! crew subsisted for eleven days on ■ one-sixth of a pint of water and ■ two biscuits. ; They landed at Anna Island and J re-provisioned the boat with water ! and cocoanuts, and prepared to resurne their voyage to Tahiti, but ! several seamen refused to proceed i any further, preferring safety to | the risk of the long pull in a rowj ing boat. • The captain and Mr. C'ollins. with j one seaman and the cook, proeeed- ! ed alone. ! On leaving Auna Island, the boat ’ struck on a coral reef, and a plank was stove in, but the. castaways ' pushed on. rowing and baling.
