During the month a great number of our teachers have been absent through sickness and the greatest difficulty has been experienced in finding substitutes. The following teachers are temporarily employed: —Mr. Warburton. Uniutaroa; Miss M. Morrison. Makaretu ; Mr. J. Vi'. Weir, Kanakanaia: Miss Stevenson, Woodville: Miss Burgess, Whatatutu; Miss Burness. Maraekakaho; Miss G. Clark, Napier South : Miss L. Burden. Napier Main ; Miss Stevens. Mangaone Valley ; Miss Burton. Taradaie ; Mr. Nicol!. Woodlands; Miss Brann, Te Puia : Miss Mo we, Morere ; Miss Barnett. Mot it; Miss Islington, Te Rehunga; Mrs. Dupree. Weber; Miss Cross, Norsewood.
Epidemics.—The attendance at the majority of your schools is suffering greatly owing to the prevalence of measles amongst the pupils. Dannevirke South and Tipauakuku schools are closed on this account and will later forego the term holiday. In order that schools shall not fall in grade the secretary is taking steps necessary to enable substitutions to be made in the average attendance of the schools affected.
TECHNICAL COMMITTEE
The Technical Committee made the following recommendations : — That in future pupil teachers desiring leave of absence from classes must communicate direct with the instructor.
That the headmaster of the Post Ahuriri school be notified that children must attend technical classes or else obtain special leave of absence from the board. That the board’s instructors accept responsibility in the instruction of cookery, woodwork, and dressmaking, also in woodworkdrawing ; that examination circulars be sent out early in the year; that a consultation among the teachers and instructors is not necessary in view of the board’s decision regarding responsibility in the classes named. That Gisborne’s request for payment of swimming capitation be granted. That arrangements be made for the conveyance of scholars of the Port Ahuriri school by rail to the Technical school.
That consideration of Inspector Isaac’s report be deferred for one month. In the meantime members to be supplied with copies. That Mr. Loten’s report and the recommendation contained therein be accepted. Recommendations adopted. FINANCE COMMITTEE’S REPORT.
The Finance Committee recommended as follows: -
(1) That tenders for addition to Havelock, Mangateretere and Mahora schools be extended for one week and that the tender of J. Colley at £2»>* for addition to the Mangapapa school bo accepted.
(2) That consideration of H. Bodley’s claim for £'47 10 -. half cost of erecting original school at Te Pohui, be deferred. (4) That the board's advertising be done in the Napier. Gisborne and Dannevirke papers. (5) That accounts amounting to £*7ls 6 10 be passed for payment. Report adopted. APPOINT.'!EN TS AND SCHOLARSHIPS COMMITTEE. It was recommended as follows : (1) That Mr. Barnby be transferred when a vacanc-. <x'ctirs. That M 8..0k ;ng be transferred to Makauri. (3) That Miss Brat my be transferred to Matawai. ft) That the action of the master at Mataman in dismissing certain children be upheld. (5) That Messrs. Farren. ami Nicholls replies with regard to tin satisfactory records at Tikokino be accepted as sarisfacbTV. (6) That the application of the Whakarata Committee for a > i.a;._-i of teacher be received. (7) That W. Smith (I’aki Pak;>.
and G. Piper (Te Puia) be granted one month's leave of absence, and J. Bowie of Wairoa be granted one week.
SCHOOL COMMITTEE COR DESPONDENCE.

Haveio-k. The alteration in the construction of the addition to the school which was suggested was agreed to.
Puka.- An application to be made to the Department for a residence.
Clive.—The foreman to report on tiie fencing.
Pakowhai.—Application to be made to the Minister of Agriculture for hedge plants.
Mangatahi.—A £1 for £1 grant up to £6 was granted for metalling.
.Mangateretere.-- Tiie alterations suggested by the committee were agreed to.
Wairoa.—No subsidy was granted for the purpose of re-forming a library. It was decided to ascertain the board’s position with regard to the poplars of another man
in casting leaves into the tanks of the school. Taradale.—The overseer to report on the defective fireplace. The alteration to the roof drainage was granted. Elsthorpe.—A subsidy of £1 for £1 up to £9 was granted for fencing. Port Ahuriri.—The foreman to report on coat of insanitary outhouse and dilapidated dividing fence. Alakauri.— Extra conveniences to be provided and others repaired. Other matters of this nature were left in the hands of the northern members to investigate. Te Hapara. A subsidy of £2o was granted for. improvements The question of making increased accommodation to be held over for a month. Matawai. Inquiries to be imide for a suitable site. Tiie Napier Technical Association wrote inviting members to the opening- of the new enginem-ijg workshops on the 28th inst. Accepted. The Commissioner of Crown Lands wrote agreeing to transfer lot 2. sec. 14, Woodville, for lot 5. —Received.
