THE GISBORNE INSTALLATION. In last v ear's Public Works votes provision was made for the erection of a medium-power moicss station in the neighbourhood
Gisborne as a portion oi a sc-bvuie of wireless installation thr mgnodt the Dominion, eoiiipris'i'.g : w > logo power suitioiis, one al either end, itiid medium power stalmns at certain points along the coast. The vicetion of the Wellington station was proceeded with first, and is expected to be open for commercial use shortly. Preliminary arrangements m connection with the other stations arc now receiving attention, im-hiding the ereciion of the Gisborne station.
Air. J. Oichiston. chief telebraph engineer lor the Dominion, accompanied by Air. Slirimptoii, the new-ly-appointed telegraph engineer for the Wellington district (which comprises Gisborne), and Air. Bourkc. a wireless expert, are at present on a visit to Gisborne, and one matter which is receiving their attention is naturally the wireless installation.
Conditions being favourable we understand it- is intended to erect the aerial wires on the Government block adjoining the Post Office. The station will have an ordinary’ rating standard of 360 miles, and it will thus be able to hold communication with both Auckland and Wellington. Under favourable conditions al night the station will have a much # wider range of operations.
The Gisborne installation will undoubtedly be of great service in connection with shipping, which is no doubt the main consideration but it is the intention of the Department to turn it to commercial use where possible, and wireless messages may be despatched upon the international charge of lOd per word.
Kaiti hill, unfortunately, stands between the site and the east, but it is to he hoped this will not be found an insurmountable obstacle. —Poverty Bav ■‘Herald.”
