ACCIDENTS AND DEATHS.
KILLED BY A FALL OF COAL,
[per press association.] Dunedin, -July 21. A sad accident occurred at Freeman’s coal mine. Abbotsford, last night, whereby a young married man named James Walker lost his life. It appears t hat he was working late on the night shift taking out pillars. About 12 o’clock his mate called him. Receiving no answer, he went to see if anything was wrong, and discovered that 1 fall had taken place burying ’Walker. An alarm was at once given, and willing hands set to work to recover the body, which wes extricated at 11 o’clock this morning. The deceased leaves a wife and one child, for whom much sympathy :s felt. Walker was the son of Air. Walker. owner of the Brighton colliery. Tie learned bis business with his father, arid was a good miner as well as a popular and respected young fellow. This is the first serious accident that has happened in the mine since it was opened -16 years ago.
