The Hastings branch of the Oddfellows Lodge will hold their annual euchre party and social in th© Oddfellows’ Hall this evening. The first consignment of steel pipes to be used in the Hastings water scheme, arrived yesterday from the manufacturers at Wanganui. The members of the Hastings Fire Brigade and the employees of the Frimley Canning Factory'tried conclusions at euchre at the Fire Station last evening, the fire-fight-ers winning by 111 points to their opponents* 13i. At the conclusion of the games the Brigade entertained the visitors at a “smoker.” Anenjoyable evening was spent in toast and song.
A meeting of th» Hastings Hospital Ball Coinnfifltee was held yesterday, the Mayor (Mr. Garnett) presiding over a large attendance. Excellent progress reports were received from the various sub-com-mittees, and everything points to a successful result. The Mayoress (Mrs. Garnett) has donated two trophies to be awarded for the best dressed boy and girl in fancy costume. The committee will act as judges. At last night’s meeting of the Hastings Borough Council, in opposing Cr. George’s motion in favour of continuing Karamu road from its present terminus to Murdoch road, Cr. Donovan pointed out that there were many other “blind” roads ■which needed opening just as urgently as the ona under consideration, and he instanced the following:— Lovcdal© road, Pepper street, Stanley street, Davis street, McLean street, Cook street, Fenwicke street, Agnew street, and Pattison street.— Cr. George accepted an amendment to refer his proposal to the Streets Committee to interview Mr. Harris regarding a grant of the land necessary to complete the road.
Cr. George has given notice to move at the next meeting of the Hastings Borough Council —(1) That the application for the transfer of Mr. R. McGaflin’s contractfor the manufacture and delivery of sewer pipes to the Masterton Pipe and Cement Company be reconsidered, as the Council were not in possession of the full facts of the ease : (2) That the amount (£25) voted by the Napier Harbour Board towards celebrating the Coronation be accepted, and the Board thanked ; also that the £25 be set aside for a drinking fountain in one of the public streets to be decided on later, and that the mover obtain plans of foundations suitable for the purpose and report to the next meeting of the Council.
