MAGISTRATE’S COURT
HASTINGS. (.Before Mr. S. E. McCarthy, S.M ) CLAIM AND COUNTERCLAIM. AV. J. Hopkins and Co., acting for Carbould and Co. (Christchurch), sued Samuel Charlton for the sum of £l5/17/- for goods supplied. Defendant counter-claimed £l7'ls'- for board and residence at his hotel and the use of sample rooms. After taking evidence, his. AVorship reserved his decision. NATIVES AND LIQUOR. Jessie Brown, a barmaid employed at the Grand Hotel, Hastings, was charged with selling liquor to a Native for consumption off licensed premises.
Defendant was represented by Mr. Lusk, and pleaded guilty. In recording a conviction, his AVorsbip said that it was well for licensed persons and others to know that the fine for selling liquor to Natives in the proclaimed area was £5O. If the defendant had been a licensed person who made a profit by the sale, a heavy fine would have been imposed, but in the present case this was not so, and the ends of justice would be met by the infliction of a nominal penalty. Fined 40/-, and costs 17/-. ADJOURNED. George Beresford Mackay, licensee of the Grand Hotel, was charged with that on June 19th he did sell liquor to a person already in a state of intoxication; and also with permitting drunkenness on his licensed premises on the same date. On the application of Mr. Lusk, the case was adjourned for a fortnight owing to the defendant being too ill to appear.
