IMPERIAL PREFERENCE.
STATEMENT BY MR. BALFOUR
(Received 12, 8.5 a.m.) London, July 7 12. Mr. Balfour is presiding at the banquet to celebrate Mr. Chamberlain’s birthday. A message sent assuring Mr. Chamberlain of the whole-hearted determination te carry through the policy of Imperial preference. Mr. Balfoursaid that the most favoured natimu treaties were going to cause inct.«n<l>arable trouble at the British Foreign Office ; their abrogation would make the British free trade policy totally impossible. The statesmen of our great dominions had begun to realise how extraordinarily they were hampered.
