ARBITRATION COURTS.
ENGINE DRIVERS PROTEST. (Received 28, 8.5 a.m.) ' Sydney, June 28. Mr. Mitchell, general secretary; of the Engine Drivers and Fire-! men’s Association, referring to the High Court judgment regarding’ registration under Commonwealth ; arbitration, asks the Federal Government to amend the Act in order to overcome the difficulty created and to clearly define the meaning of the term “industry.” He says that the judgment renders invalid a large number of industrial agreements, and if they are interfered with trouble will ensue. Although opposed to a strike, that is the only method left if deprived of the right of arbitral tion. It is possible the Governor-Gen-eral will proclaim such association an organisation under the Act. If that is done trouble can be averted. Referring to the different courts, Mr. Mitchell stated that it cost; £lOO less to obtain an award in the Federal Court covering the whole of Australia than in a State Court for one State only.
