HOSPITALS CONFERENCE.
Wellington, June 27. The Hospitals Conference opened to-day, Mr. J. G. Wilson presiding. • Addresses were delivered by Lord Islington, Hon. Geo. Fowlds, and Dr. Valintine. After much discussion on the question of voting on matters to be dealt with, it was decided that all delegates appointed by the boards, whether members of employees of such boards, should have one vote each. DISTRICT NURSING SCHEME.
“Referring to the District Nursing] Scheme, Dr. Valintine said that so j far the scheme had been a great] success, and an extension of the scheme might be confidently looked for during the next few years. 1 Of maternity nnrses, especially in the far north, there is a great dearth, and encouragement must be given to women to take up this work in the country districts. OUTCASTS AND PARIAHS. Another subject inquiring attention was the treatment of the undesirable citizen. “ There is no doubt,” Dr. Valintine added, “that the path of the wastrel is made far too easy, and we should not allow mawkish sentimentality to prevent us from doing our duty by these outcasts and pariahs. We have no hesitation in confining in hospital a person suffering from infectious disease, and why should we be reluctant to mete out similar treatment to the vicious, intemperate and to the deserting father, and, if necessary, make them work for the support of their families ? Until co-operation is brought about between the public and private charitable organisations, very little can be done.”
