THE ILLUMINATIONS. • (press association. —copybight]. i London, June 26. ! ikfter the review a rocket was I fired at 10 o’clock at night and the fleet of battleships and excursion steamers was instantaneously outI lined in light as from a single switch.
It was a dazzling spectacle against the dark background of sea and sky. Golden lights marked each waterline and other lights the run of the decks,- tfie curves of the bows, funnels, bridges, and conning towers. Red lamps outlined and crossed the Admiral’s flags. Cunningly hidden search lights on the United States battleship Delaware played on the fluttering flags with beautiful effect. Groups of jewelled coloured lights and numberless rockets, mirrored in the sea, added to the beauty of the spectacle. An hour later another rocket was fired and the phantom fleet of light disappeared.
PRESENTATION OF PLATE. (Received. 27, 12.20 p.m.) 1 London, June 26. Lady Northcote presented. Australia’s gift of plate to H.M.S. Comonwealth at Spithead. Captain Vaughan Lewes, acknowledging the gift, said it gave him the greatest pleasure in accepting the magnificent presentation, and he sincerely thanked Australia, on behalf of the whole Navy, for the honour done them.
