The Y.M.C.A. campaign at Hastings has so far realised £2155/13/6, with seven days to mn. The leading teams are Mr. L. P. Millar’s £ll4/7/1, Mr. J. W. Fears’ £lO4/6/-, Mr. H. G. Reeves £4l/17/6. The Department ot Public Health has written to the Hastings Borough Council, enclosing a copy of the regulations for the prevention or checking of the spread of plague by the extermination of rats, which are the active disseminators of this dangerous and infectious disease. It is recommended by the department that immediate effect shall be given to the regulations, and every effort made to carry them out in their entirety within the district under control, special attention being given to grain stores, butchers’ shops, restaurants, and other places where articles of food are kept, as well as private houses and places of business generally. For ordinary households the use of the natural enemy—the cat —has been found a most effective aid in reducing the number of the rodents. Poisoning and trapping must be practised on an extensive scale, and all rats so disposed of should be immediately buried or perfectly burnt. The department has offered to assist the local authority in the matter. >
