Mr. J. A. Gallagher returned to Hastings on Saturday evening. The Kaiser has conferred the second-class Order of the Crown upon Sir E. Shackleton. Mr. C. R. Pollen, Commissioner of Crown Lands, returned on Saturday night from a visit to Wellington. Mr. H. Hill, Chief Inspector of Schools, is at present absent in the country and will not return until Wednesday evening. Mr. W. G. Gould, secretary of Hawke’s Bay Fruitgrowers’ Association, left Hastings this morning on a visit to the Wellington Exhibition. Mr. Gould will also visit the Palmerston North Winter Show and returns home on Monday next. On Sunday, June 18, Mr. R. Coupland Harding, of Wellington, completed his fifty years as printer and journalist in this country. On June 18. 1861, he was bound apprentice to the “Hawke’s Bay Times,” the first daily paper to be printed between Wellington and Auckland, and remained with that paper until 1874. Mr. Harding has now been a resident of Wellington for many years. A London cable states that Sir Eldon Gorst (presumably meaning Sir John Eldon Gorst; Civil Commissioner Waikato, 1861-63) suffered a relapse after an operation, and his condition is causing grave anxiety. Sir John was born at Preston in the year 1835. The cable may possibly allude to Sir Eldon Gorst, Sir John’s son, who was born in New Zealand in the year 1861, and who is now British agent and Con-sul-General in Egypt. Mr. Molineaux. who has been appointed Inspector for New Zealand for the Bank of New South Wales, was born in England, came to Sydney as a boy. and was educated there. He joined the head office of the bank as a junior in 1868. He was in Ravenswood (with Mr. Finch) as accountant in 1870. In 1871 he was relieving officer at Townsville, and subsequently visit-j rd England. On his return in 1877; he became manager at Chilt-em. in; 1879 manager at Inglewood, and ini 1.886 manager at Kynrton. In Jan-] uary. 1891, he came to New Zealand and took charge of the Wellington office. He was subsequently appointed to Christchurch, and re--eently returned to Wellington. j
