FOOTBALL.

RUGBY. AT THE RIDGE. No senior games were played on Saturday as the representatives were playing Poverty Bay at Gisborne. The junior games were fairly interesting, the Waimarnnia. Athletic being especially so. Good defence by Waimarino’s backs at critical moments saved their side on more than one occasion. Their attack was on the whole weak, and a lesson should be taken from Kautuki. The try scored against Athletics was a very lucky one, as it was a scramble for the ball. Athletics for the first time this season entered the field with a full team, but three of those were emer-

gency men. They played a good willing game right through and the result should have been different with any luck at all. ROVERS v. CELTIC A. Early in this game a sad accident occurred. Bainbridge, Celtic’s full back had the misfortune to have his leg broken. The mishap was in no way the outcome, of rough play, but was purely an accident. Messrs Dwyer and Castles lent first aid and Mr. McCormick removed him in his motor car to town.

Kautuki had a day off hard work, their opponents, Celtic B, played for about an hour with 10 men, in which time Kautuki ran up 26 points. WAIMARAMA v. ATHLETIC. Waimarama (Whites) got quickly off the mark and rush play into Athletic’s (Reds) 25, and for a short time had the advantage. Reds gradually cleared and play continued in neutral territory. Athletics broke away and carried play close to Whites’ line, off-side play relieved Whites from a precarious position. The game now became very willing and first one side were attackers and then the other, and at call of half-time neither side had scored. On resuming play Whites rushed down on Reda’ line and after some scrummaging Kora scored for Wais, the kick failed. Athletic immediately after had the Native boys in a bad fix, but they were equal to the occasion and all attempts to get over were beaten back. A free-kick relieved. Athletics had the best of the game until the finish, but were unable to beat down Wkimarama’s defence. Mr. Horne was referee. CELTIC A v. ROVERS.

Celtic started play short-handed and there numbers were reduced by the removal of Bainbridge, but after a good tussle they came out on top by 6 points to 3. Mr. Stevens controlled the game.

KAUTUKI (26) v. CELTIC B (0). This was a practice for Kautuki, as Celtic made no stand against them and after about an hour’s play had a score of 2 Opoints. to nil. Mr. De Laney Refereed.

AT NAPIER. Seniors. CITY (11) v. AHURIRI (8). This match was played on McLean Park on Saturday afternoon, and after a good exhibition the game concluded with City 11 points, Ahuriri 8. HIGH SCHOOL v. OLD BOYS A. This match was played on the Recreation Ground on Saturday afternoon. After a few minutes play, Shellum for Old Boys scored. The kick failed. After some even play Downing scored for Old Boys, the kick again failing. Old Boys kept pressing, and Robinson scored, the kick being unsuccessful. Play continued in School's 25 until halftime. On resuming, Mullany for Old Boys scored, the kick again failing. Paeroa scored a little later, but the try was not converted. School pressed hard, and Geddes made a fine run, but with no result. The game concluded with 18 points for Old Boys and High School nil.
